Monsoon rains on battered earth
seeping winds promised growth
restoring hues of months long gone
despair, it slithers in the undergrowth
Will the new crops douse our hunger?
will there be an excess
after the elephants plunder?
will we make enough to sow again
or would the men from the city buy for less again?
We toil daily to feed our children
to keep them clothed, to educate them
will fate mock us again and again
will I have to hang myself like the others in shame?
